Release Notes

Changelog

What’s New in 1.3.14

  • Upgrades the “VIN Scan” barcode scanning feature to restore this feature in the app. A required third-party component had been deprecated by the third-party and was replaced with a modern equivalent component.
  • There is now a “Flow VIN Scanner” mobile app in the Google Play store that you must install in addition to the primary FLOW mobile app for Android to use this functionality.

What’s New in 1.3.13

  • Fixes an issue where the “Delete” icon was visible to Field Agent users who were not granted the delete vehicle permission.
  • Miscellaneous back-end code improvements.

What’s New in 1.3.12

  • Enhancement: The “Prior Rental” value has been added to Buyer's Guides generated and printed from Flow.
  • Fixes an issue where Fuel Type field value(s) sometimes prevent data and image uploads.
  • The Barcode scanner feature accessible in the Add Vehicle workflow (UI) has been refactored to restore this functionality to working order using the latest version of the Google barcode scan API.
  • Enhancement: the “Vehicle Photo Staging Area” feature set has been improved to improve reliability and usability in the field. This functionality uses SFTP delivery of vehicle photos uploaded from the app to a tenant-specific FTP directory, preventing the photos from being ingested into the system for syndication. The tenant can then download the vehicle images to edit and enhance the photos before uploading the photos to complete the automated process in Flow to enqueue the enhanced photos for syndication to dealership and third-party websites.
  • Fixes an issue where the app crashed when certain model external cameras were connected to certain model Android tablets.
  • Miscellaneous back-end code improvements.

What’s New in 1.3.11

  • New Feature: users can now “bulk delete” photos for a single vehicle from the interface via a “Delete all” action.
  • Enhancement: Inventory List UI retains search & filter selections during your user session. If you open and view vehicle records from the search results, when you return to the List UI your search criteria will remain.
  • Enhancement: increased the width of the dealership pick-list field to ensure the entire dealership name can be read.
  • Support for Android OS version 14
  • Ends support for installation of Flow on tablets running Android OS versions 8 and 9
  • Fixes an issue where the list of service types sporadically does not display after selecting a vehicle to service.
  • Fixes an issue with the photo import workflow (from an external camera) where, when manually matching photos to a vehicle, all the photos are not imported into the mobile app for the vehicle.

What’s New in 1.3.10

  • Resolves an issue where vehicle photos imported into the app upload to the cloud repeatedly causing duplicate photos to display in the web application.
  • Resolves an issue where the UI appears to “go back” (as if you tapped the Android back button) when you connect an external device (like a camera or a printer) via USB to your tablet.

What’s New in 1.3.9

  • NEW FEATURE! Added a Refresh action button to the Upload Queue screen to allow users to update the queue manually on demand. This screen displays the vehicles, photos, and other records enqueued by the field agent user to be sync'd up to the cloud.
  • Enhancement to window label generation and printing
  • Added more granular internal logging to window label generation and printing.
  • Provides compatibility with Android OS version 13.
  • Prevents the installation of the mobile app on devices running Android 7 or earlier.
  • Back-end improvements and upgrades to address app performance.

What’s New in 1.3.8

  • NEW FEATURE! Added three new, default Lot Services that can be activated per dealership customer to better track work performed, to charge dealership customers for additional billable services, and to service new vehicle types.
  • Provides compatibility with the latest Android OS versions including Android 12.
  • Remediates any lingering issues related to compatibility with the latest Android 11 version and builds.
  • Back-end improvements and upgrades to address app performance.

What's New in 1.3.7

  • Provides app compatibility with the latest Android OS versions including Android 10 (named Q) and 11 (named R).

What's New in 1.3.6

  • New Feature: the authentication (i.e. log in) screen will now prompt the user before she/he logs in when a newer version of FLOW is available. A prompt will appear for the user allowing him/her to install the latest version before logging in
  • Improvement to how FLOW logs and tracks events like the app crashing unexpectedly. The tech used to track and log crashes has been updated, and there is no visible different on the interface to end users.

What’s New in the Flow Web App

  • NEW FEATURE: added additional filters for the “Work Summary Data Report” for “Stock Number” and “VIN”. Quickly filter data in your selected time period to locate individual or small batches of VINs or Stock Numbers.

What's New in 1.3.5

  • Back-end improvements to utilize our latest APIs.
  • Improvement to the VIN decode functionality to handle a new use case where the vehicle status was null causing the decode to fail. Now if the status equals null, the status value will be programmatically set to “update” to avoid VIN decode failures in the FLOW VDP interface.
  • Improvement to some of the back-end app performance and event logging messages.

What's New in 1.3.4

  • Improvement to the Preferences screen to support vertical scrolling.
  • Rectified an issue related to the VIN Decode functionality (i.e. Add Vehicle UI, VDP UI) where vehicles decoded in the Flow interface by a user were not always enqueued to be sync’d to the cloud.
  • Miscellaneous back-end improvements and enhancements to the vehicle sync functionality.

What's New in 1.3.3

  • Improvement to the Vehicle VDP: the vehicle detail interface has been updated to allow the Vehicle Service Selection pop-over to scroll vertically when many lot services have been selected for a vehicle.
  • Security enhancement to the app required due to recent Android OS changes by Google.
  • Improvement to VIN Decode: enhancement to the the vehicle decode functionality in the app interface for the use case where a VIN cannot be decoded (i.e. too few characters, too many characters, etc.) and the interface presents an in progress “spinner” after the decode has failed.
  • Improvement to Data Synchronization between the app and the cloud: enhancement to address the infrequent use case where a user adds a vehicle in FLOW using a stock number that is already present in inventory on another vehicle.
  • Miscellaneous back-end improvements and enhancements.

What's New in 1.3.2.1

  • NEW FEATURE! Added eight, new, default Lot Services that can be activated per dealership customer to better track work performed, to charge dealership customers for additional billable services, and to service new vehicle types.
  • NEW FEATURE! Ever need vehicle photos to be sync'd to the cloud from your mobile device, but you then want to prevent the photos from being syndicated automatically to a dealership's website and its third party websites/apps? Now you can configure the synchronization functionality to upload/sync photo from your mobile device to the cloud without automatically syndicating the same photos. This new functionality allows lot services providers to manually enhance or edit photos upon receipt in the cloud account before the photos are later syndicated on behalf of each dealership.

What's New in 1.3.2

Improvements to data and media synchronization functionality:

  • Users reported issues with “uploads” from the app to the cloud where data and/or photos did not always successfully upload to the cloud; with data and photos enqueued for upload, the bulk upload did not complete as expected. This issue has been addressed.
  • Users reported a use case where photos that had been successfully sync'd to the tablet from an external camera and then uploaded to the cloud from Flow would not remain visible in Flow after a successful upload. Photos uploaded were sporadically no longer visible on VDPs for affected vehicles even though they had been uploaded successfully into the web application. Photos are now visible in the UI before, during and after sync events.

What's New in 1.3.1

  • Minor improvement to the upload and sync functionality related to Work Summary data.

What's New in 1.3.0

  • New Feature! You asked and the design team listened (keep the great feedback coming about other areas of Flow that could be even better). An all new, feature-rich, data synchronization UI (a.k.a. Bulk Upload) that dramatically improves user visibility re data enqueued for sync to the cloud and data successfully sync’d. The new uI includes the state of each vehicle enqueued for easy identification of serviced vehicles, the dealership where vehicles were serviced, the ability to remove a vehicle from the sync queue, and more.
  • Update to the vehicle action permissions so that they can be customized per market.
  • Minor interface UI/UX improvements.
  • Back-end improvements and upgrades to address app performance.

What's New in 1.2.3

  • Improvement: the photo upload functionality and its "back-end" design has been improved reducing the duration of bulk photo uploads by up to 50%. While the interface has not been changed and users do not need to adjust their workflow, the upload of images from the tablet to the cloud is significantly faster and efficient, reducing wait times during uploads.
  • Additional back-end optimizations and improvements.

What's New in 1.2.2

  • New Feature! Leveraging the insight of tablet geo-location, the Flow user's location is now stored securely and uploaded to the cloud for analysis and review when needed by management. Track agent location when necessary and validate his/her dealership visits each day.
  • Improvement: the "Export to Excel" feature in the Work Summary Data Report was improved to include all data points present in a Work Summary to ensure you can see all data from a Work Summary. Exporting the report data set (based on your date range selection).
  • Minor improvement the UX of the Batch Window Label Print Queue interface to avoid closing the screen when a single label is present.
  • Additional back-end optimizations and improvements.

What's New in 1.2.1

  • New Feature! Add a new action button to the Batch Window Label Print Queue screen allowing the user to quickly remove all labels from the queue. Now, after printing all labels at a dealership, you can quickly clear out the queue before leaving the job site. Time saver!
  • Improvement: you can now add Spanish language window stickers and Buyer's Guides to the batch window label print queue to quickly print Spanish labels while printing English language labels for a dealership.
  • Resolved a minor issue where the window label count (for a discrete label type) was right justified inside the circle shape next to each row in the bulk window label queue screen. All counts are now centered inside each circle.
  • Additional back-end optimizations and improvements.

What's New in 1.2

  • New Feature! Added a "Vehicle Notes" field to the VDP that syncs with the Vehicle Notes field in the companion web app. You can train photographers, videographers and field agents to enter important service related notes into this field about each VIN. For example, can’t service a vehicle due to a flat tire? Can’t locate a vehicle or key fobs? Best used to note why vehicles can’t be serviced.
  • New Feature! The Photo Timer Buffer setting is now configurable per dealership. Flow had a “hard coded” 60 second timer delay between each vehicle photo capture action that was designed to reduce the likelihood that photos would be automatically associated with the wrong vehicle at a dealership (after all photos were synced to the app from an external camera). In many situations there was a need to be able to adjust this timer buffer between vehicles to allow the photographer to either move faster or slower between vehicles at a given dealership. Now you can! Now defaults to 60 seconds, but you can quickly change this value under Preferences to any value from 0 on up.
  • New Feature! Print Window Labels for New Stock Type Vehicles. Now that certain dealer groups are legally requiring their dealerships to print Buyer’s Guides for new stock type vehicles in specific situations like demos and service loaners being sold, the app needed to allow users to print all window labels for new vehicles!
  • Resolved a minor issue where a saved P.O. Number did not display on the PDF Work Summary in the case where the P.O. number was entered by the user after the associated Work Summary had been completed.
  • Additional back-end optimizations and improvements.

What's New in 1.1.14

  • *New Feature!* A new, vehicle Options & Packages selection interface that replaces the original selection UI from the VDP. Includes brand new functionality for this workflow like identifying "favorite" options that will display at the top of your options list at all times, reducing time to locate discrete values you frequently select. Also incorporates/displays OEM Build data from VIN Decode that is pre-selected for the vehicle, preventing the need to manually check "every box". And that’s just a taste of this powerful new workflow, so check it today!
  • *New Feature!* All action buttons / icons on the VDP are now deactivated for the user. When the user activates a service session at the dealership, the appropriate VDP buttons become active (based on vehicle service level selected by the user). This new behavior prevents users from performing service activity that is not properly billed.

What's New in 1.1.13

  • Improvements to Work Summary (aka invoices) synchronization to the cloud
  • Assorted back-end optimizations and improvements

What's New in 1.1.12

  • Improvements to the Add Vehicle workflow

What's New in 1.1.11

  • Improvements to vehicle price updates
  • Assorted back-end optimizations and improvements

What's New in 1.1.10

  • New Feature! Added a CARAFAX vehicle history attribute to the VDP to allow users to quickly understand which vehicles have history data from CARFAX. Since pre-owned vehicle Window Stickers can be configured to insert summary data from the vehicle history report, this field simplifies the window label printing workflow for the photographer (aka field agent) on the lot. When a vehicle has a CARFAX history report, select the Window Sticker "template" that inserts the CARFAX data. No CARFAX report? Then select the other Window Sticker template without the CARFAX data.
  • Miscellaneous code optimizations and improvements

What's New in 1.1.9

  • New Feature! While performing services at a job site (i.e. you have a Service Session active for a dealer), after selecting a vehicle to service, the app will automatically "decode the VIN". The automatic VIN decode event ensures that the most accurate and up-to-date vehicle data is visible to the user. Printed window labels will be more accurate and data validation performed by the photographer will be faster and more efficient.
  • Assorted back-end optimizations and improvements.

What's New in 1.1.8

  • New feature! "VIN Decode" added to the VDP (Vehicle Detail Page) to allow you to decode a vehicle already in inventory. Sometimes referred to as "re-decode," this feature allows you to decode a VIN that has already been decoded at some point in the past, causing the existing vehicle data to be updated with the accurate vehicle data. For example, if someone entered a vehicle in inventory originally with the wrong "Series / Trim" value(s), you can decode the VIN to not only update the Series / Trim automatically, but the corresponding vehicle attributes will automatically update as well. And given that many attributes will differ from one Trim level to the next for a discrete model vehicle (engine, transmission, etc.) the VDP Decode ensures data accuracy while saving time!
  • Miscellaneous back-end optimizations and improvements.
  • New Feature! "Work Summary Data Report" added to the web app to allow bookkeepers, accounts receivable clerks, or controllers to view and download completed Work Summary (aka invoice) data. Quickly access service charges per dealer to initiate billing to your dealership customers. Includes the ability to view one or more Work Summary PDFs for the time period selected, and you can quickly export the Work Summary data from the web app into a CSV / Excel file to import data into accounting software applications.

What's New in 1.1.7

  • Improvement to the Batch Window Label Print functionality.
  • Miscellaneous back-end optimizations and improvements.

What's New in 1.1.6

  • Improvements to VIN Decode functionality for a new Fleet vehicle use case and to resolve two minor issues.

What's New in 1.1.5

  • Added business logic to force an incomplete Work Summary into a Completed State to avoid the fees not being billed to the customer due to the user's failure to properly complete the final invoice of the work day.
  • User can now view both the clean / original photos of a vehicle and the enhanced images (i.e. photo overlays, branding graphics, background replaced, etc.) for a discrete vehicle via the VDP.
  • Added a notification to the user about an incomplete Work Summary (aka Invoice) for the dealership that appears when the user attempts to perform a bulk upload to the cloud and when the user attempts to log out of Flow.

What's New in 1.1.4

  • Added the storage of date/time stamps for 12 new user actions improving visibility of user performance measurements and user activity on-the-job.
  • Tap a serviced vehicle record on the Work Summary UI to bounce to the VDP.
  • Further improved the tablet "keep alive" functionality to prevent the tablet display from "sleeping" by adding this functionality to the Edit Vehicle UI from the VDP. This prevents the use case where a user taps to edit the vehicle, makes one or more changes, doesn't tap Save... and then is interrupted, puts a tablet down, and the Android OS forces the tablet display to sleep causing the changes to be lost (because the user didn't save his/her changes).
  • Added the US region designation acronyms (GS, SE and Natl) for Toyota vehicles to the Series attribute on the VDP. While this data was already present in the data layer, it was not visible on the interface.
  • Added two additional vehicle attributes to the data layer for support of window sticker generation: "Engine Cubic Inch Displacement" (aka Engine CID) and "Number of Cylinders". The data can be inserted into Window Stickers templates, and these attributes were added in Flow to ensure that window stickers generated in the app properly displayed these attribute values.
  • Miscellaneous code improvements

What's New in 1.1.3

  • Miscellaneous back-end improvements and optimizations to application performance

What's New in 1.1.2

  • Improvement to the vehicle Service Selection Workflow from the VDP for the use case where you service a vehicle a second or third time. In this "service re-do" scenario you might need to charge your customer a service price that is less than your normal / standard price. Now, when you identify the vehicle service as a "re-do," you can select the service price point to enter on to the Work Summary (aka invoice)

What's New in 1.1.1

  • An improvement to individual Window Sticker generation: in this case you edit a vehicle and generate a Window Sticker before synching your changes to the cloud.
  • An improvement to batch window label generation: minor improvement for how generated window labels are centered vertically when you generate both a window sticker and a buyer's guides at the same time for a single vehicle.
  • Improved the design of how the app downloads (from the cloud) the window labels for each dealership for a user to print a window label for a single vehicle. This improvement removes the previous functionality where each visit to a vehicle record to print a window label resulted in a new download of all the configured window labels (i.e. Window Stickers and Buyer's Guides). Now the configured window labels download when you first select the dealer account during your user session reducing the "chattiness" of how the app downloads label templates.
  • Further improved the tablet "keep alive" functionality to prevent the tablet display from "sleeping" while an upload / sync operation is in process. Add this functionality to both the main start view / dashboard and the VLP.
  • Additional improvements to vehicle data and photo synchronization to the cloud from the app to address feedback from users.
  • An improvement to the photo matching workflow that a user can perform manually when synching photos from an external camera into the app.
  • An improvement to how the app handles an active Service Session for a dealership when the user navigates from an active dealership to another dealership in his/her route.
  • Improvements to the Work Summary (aka Invoice) screen and workflow.
  • Minor improvement to the authentication screen.
  • Additional improvements to data and photo synchronization error handling to optimize performance.
  • An improvement to the bulk upload functionality to avoid a user's interruption of an active upload that prevents the upload from finishing. In this case the user initiates the sync and then quickly logs out of the app. Uh, so yeah, that would obviously destroy the upload. Now a user cannot log out of the app until an active sync completes.

What's New in 1.1

  • Batch Window Label Printing: enqueue window labels to be printed for individual vehicles and then print groups of labels (i.e. Window Stickers, Buyer's Guides, etc.) for multiple vehicles at once. For example, accelerate service delivery by performing the photography service for 40 vehicles and when finished print the Window Stickers for all 40 vehicles at once.
  • No Napping: an improvement to the upload functionality to prevent a tablet from going to sleep during a sync event when initiated from the Bulk Upload screen, since Android will sometimes nap (winning) during uploads depending on the tablet owner settings
  • Invoice Printing: improved Work Summary (aka "invoice") printing for New vs Used vehicles to filter by Stock Type and print quickly
  • Control: user permissions and security for you to better control use of the app by your employees in the field
  • Sync Mojo: improvements to the data and photo synchronization design to support more sync Use Cases and to further improve sync accuracy between the app and the cloud
  • Data Orchestration: the first of two releases that will deliver full support for "Vehicle Locking Rules" to prevent user uploads from Flow from overwriting vehicle data / photos changed by another user in the web app (IIM)
  • Other miscellaneous improvements and fixes from user feedback
  • Improvements to user authentication
  • Improvement to Work Summary (invoice) generation and printing
  • Improvements to window label generation and printing

What's New in 1.0

  • Initiate and Track Services Performed at Client Sites: includes initiating service at any client location, select vehicles to service, select a service to perform per vehicle, initiate service(s) per vehicle, complete service(s), etc.
  • Print a Work Summary per Client Visit: all services performed for each service session at a client's location roll up into a Work Summary report. Some folks use these as their invoices for their customers, others use them to list all work performed during each visit! Print one or more copies while on site with any laser printer via any common printing method (USB, Bluetooth, WiFi, etc.)
  • Print Work Summaries for New vs Used Vehicles: for clients that want separate "invoices" for new vs used vehicles, you can quickly filter the Work Summary to print only those vehicles needed by the client POC
  • View Last 30 Days of Completed Service Visits: view the previous 30-days of completed service visits for each client dealership. Includes "invoices" generated by any user at your company for each client site to ensure all services rendered are visible instantly
  • Improvements to User Access Rights and Permissions: provides greater control over who can access and use Flow from your organization to prevent unauthorized use and to enforce data security, to prevent account sharing by users (which prevents visibility of which employees are doing what at client sites), and to control user costs
  • View Photo Coverage % per client
  • Search and filter Work Lists of vehicles
  • Search by the last 6 - 8 characters of a VIN
  • View and edit any vehicle, including selection of Options
  • Activity (adds, edits, deletes, price changes, etc.) performed in the Flow app for Android Tablets can be visible in the primary vehicle audit log in the cloud (aka the Audit Trail)
  • VIN Decode functionality will return only one series-specific, matching vehicle thanks to the use of OEM Build Data (note: currently available for 18 OEMs, but more OEM Build Data will become available in 2017 - 2018)
  • Print Window Stickers and Buyer’s Guides for used vehicles, including FTC compliant Buyers Guides and custom Window Stickers
  • Print Jaguar Land Rover OEM, CPO window labels
  • View pre-existing vehicle videos
  • View and re-arrange vehicle photos
  • Capture pre-recon/detail photos of vehicles using the tablet camera
  • Use the Photo Timer to start and stop capturing photos per vehicle (for bulk import later)
  • Sync Photos from any external camera in bulk to the app
  • Automatically syncs Field Agent activity to the cloud for reporting on KPIs like service start/stop times and durations per dealer, per vehicle, etc.
  • Additional photo synchronization functionality to manually associate photos on an external camera with a vehicle you choose in a case where all the photos on your camera could not automatically sync with vehicles in the app. This is a new convenience feature for the batch photo import (for multiple vehicles at once) that prevents the need to first import the “unmatched" photos into the Android Photo Gallery app before then importing them into Flow. Now you can import unmatched photos directly into the app during the batch photo import workflow
  • Supports movement of photos from an external device via Mini-SD card for those Android tablets that have an on-board Mini-SD card port. Photos can be imported to the app via the Android Photo Gallery. If you prefer, you can elect to move photos from your external camera to the tablet by a) inserting your Mini-SD card into the tablet’s Mini-SD port, b) copying the photos to the Android Photo Gallery, and c) then using the app's "Import Photos" option in the hamburger menu to import the photos from the Android Photo Gallery
  • Users may sync vehicle photos on a DSLR or point-and-shoot camera to Flow without having to use the Android Photo Gallery as a "middle man"
  • Users may sync photos from external cameras for a single vehicle or multiple vehicles at once
  • Photos taken outside of Flow using the Android camera app can be associated with vehicles in Flow
  • Secure Storage and HTTPS Transmission of any user and tenant data
  • Sync vehicles' data and photos in bulk to the cloud per dealer or for multiple dealers at once
  • A Prelude to Batch Window Label Printing: the first of two releases that will deliver batch window label printing. This release is largely transparent as it includes "back-end" code changes not directly visible to end users. The new batch label printing UI will arrive in another release

About Flow

Flow accelerates delivery of services by automotive, photography and videography professionals to service and inspect more vehicles faster, to invoice customers, and to automate key processes before, during and after servicing a vehicle.

But why the name “Flow”? Because everyone who has done the job on-the-lot knows that to rock 100 vehicles in a day, you must bring two things to overcome the gravity and inertia of business as usual at a dealership (i.e. weather, “recon constipation,” lost keys, M.I.A. vehicles, flat tires, dead batteries, yadda, yadda, yadda):

First, you gotta Hustle (with a capital H). Slow down, slack off, get side tracked or let up, and a record setting day simply can’t. Said another way, you better keep moving or the real money won’t drop.

But just as important to knocking down 100 vehicles in a day is to connect your Hustle with flow. Flow is what dealerships, when. Flow is knowing the service ready vehicles. Flow is being able to do everything to the vehicle all at once (photos, labels, status, invoice, et all) to avoid double taps. Flow is being able track your work and to bill effortlessly. Flow is synching to the cloud as you go, not after you get home at night. Flow is working smarter, not just harder every day. Flow is lot services, accelerated.

Tablet Requirements & Recommendations

For an optimal experience with Flow, AutoUpLink Tech recommends Android tablets with the following characteristics and specifications:

Minimum Software Requirements

Minimum version of the Android Operating System: 10.0. All other Android OS versions earlier than 9.0 are no longer supported by AutoUpLink Tech.

The Android OS and tablet must be compatible with and connected to the Google Play Store (as opposed to Amazon’s Android OS tablets).

Some users who print Buyer's Guides from Flow sporadically observe that the printed label has page margins and spacing between printed lines that result in the printed label appearing a bit too small for the 8.5" x 11" paper. While everything prints and is legible, some users prefer that the Buyer's Guide content use all the available space on the printed page. This behavior is due to how the Android OS and any third party print manager apps render the PDF when it leaves the app and transfers to a printer. You can optimize Buyer's Guide printing to avoid this behavior by purchasing and installing a third party Print Manager app called "Printer Share". Our internal testing confirmed that this app did visibly improve the printed Buyer's Guide content and alleviated the concerns related to layout on a printed page.

Minimum Hardware Requirements

We strongly recommend the use of Android tablets that meet the following specifications:

  • On-board, Rear-facing HD Camera with 13 MP (MegaPixel) photo density
  • 64 GB Storage
  • Display Size: 7" minimum - 10.1" max
  • RAM: 3 GB minimum
  • Dedicated, On-board Graphics Card (as opposed to a tablet without an on-board graphics card)
  • Bluetooth
  • USB-C (or mini-USB port) for connecting printers to the tablet that do not support Bluetooth printing./li>
  • On-board Mini SD card port if you plan to move vehicle photos to the app from a third party camera using an SD Card.
  • Wi-Fi

Software Recommendations

Android OS versions 14 or 13

Depending on your printer brand, your tablet brand and the Android OS version installed, you will likely need to install the appropriate printer manufacturer app before printing window labels. There are numerous third party print services, including apps from major manufacturers like HP. Once installed, printing window labels is seamless.

Hardware Recommendations

  • On-board, Rear-facing Camera with support for 16-20 MP density
  • 128 GB Storage
  • Display Size: 7” - 8” is ideal for on-the-lot service delivery as the device is easier to carry and manipulate around vehicles
  • RAM: 6 GB
  • LTE Internet Connectivity: while you can use the app without WiFi access, we strongly recommend a tablet with LTE / 4G cellular & Internet access for the best possible experience. And since you will be using the app in an environment where WiFi is not always available, 4G service will accelerate your ability to upload data and photos during the work day.

While you can purchase any Android tablet that supports the recommended hardware specs above, AutoUpLink Tech’s testing of numerous tablet manufacturers and models identified the following “editor’s choice” manufacturers currently manufacturing Android Tablets that are compatible with the GooglePlay Store:

  • Orbic
  • HTC
  • Samsung
  • TCL

The following tablet models were particularly impressive and have provided a superior experience to users thus far:

  • Orbic Tab 8 5G
  • TCL Tab 8
  • TCL Tab Pro 5G
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab S2
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 tablets
  • HTC Nexus 9 tablet

And don’t forget accessories like screen protectors and cases to extend the longevity of your assets in the field (it’s rough out there!), lanyards, straps, etc.

Tips & Tricks

Logging In Once Installed

Your credentials (username & password) to Flow are the same credentials (single sign on) that you can use to VIN Studio, IIM, DPC or AutoUpLinkUSA.

Recommended Camera Settings

To sync / copy photos effortlessly from an external camera (i.e. DSLR or point-and-shoot camera) to the Flow app, you may need to adjust default or custom settings on your camera. Whether a camera is old or new, default factory settings on some cameras have been proven to either prevent photos from syncing to the app, to sync some photos for one vehicle to another vehicle, or to sync the correct photos out of order to the vehicle. Not cool.

Here are a few camera settings that we have found that can prevent this type of experience:

Synchronize Clocks

The camera’s clock needs to be in sync with the tablet’s clock. And ideally, the clocks on each device would be in sync to the second. The further out of sync that the two clocks are, the higher the probability that you will experience photos syncing to the wrong vehicles in a single photo shoot. While you can correct mismatched photos manually in the app, it’s much easier to get it right the first time! Take time before photographing vehicles to synchronize clocks!

MTP (Media Transfer Protocol)

Media Transfer Protocol is the USB connection Setting that is required for syncing successfully between devices. If the MTP setting in not active, the option in Flow to import photos from the camera will not show as available (the app will not “see” the camera when you connect it to your tablet via USB cable).

Most cameras should default with MTP active, or the cameras should automatically sense the need to use this setting when a camera connects. However, Sony is an example of a camera brand where this automatic handling was not the case, and a Sony camera user may have to activate the MTP setting on his/her camera.

To activate MTP on a Sony camera, navigate the camera’s settings like: Menu —> Settings → Main Settings → USB Connect Setting. There should be three USB connection options:

  • Auto
  • MTP
  • Mass Storage

"MTP" is the proper selection.

HDR Setting

We recommend capturing photos in "HDR" mode, which typically produces well balanced (think lighting), high definition photos. The majority of digital cameras and SmartPhones provide an optional HDR mode setting you can activate. Geek out here.

Photo Aspect Ratio

Photos do not need to be in a specific ratio to sync and upload.

While 4:3 is the standard aspect ratio in our systems, a 3:2 photo will still be processed as is, and the system will maintain the ratio once synced.

Photo Resolution

Set the photo resolution to be 1600 x 1200 in your camera.

It is recommended that users not take photos in a higher resolution than 1600 x 1200, since they will be resized. Why is this an issue?

  • Users may take photos in a higher resolution thinking that the image quality will be retained, but since .jpg is not a lossless format, downsizing the photos to meet the 1600 x 1200 standard could result in loss of image quality.
  • Photos taken in higher resolution than 1600 x 1200 will have larger file sizes and therefore take longer to sync between devices and to the cloud. The extra time spent will be wasted since the images will be downsized anyway.

Unsupported Android Tablets

Our testing revealed that inexpensive tablets priced below $249 tend to have hardware components that do not perform admirably or don’t have important hardware components (i.e. camera, a video chip / card, etc.) that improve the user’s experience. Therefore, we strongly recommend users avoid such “low-end" or "entry level" tablet hardware from any manufacturer priced typically below $249. AutoUpLink Tech will not officially support low end tablets because issues were observed with app performance on such tablets that could not be corrected. Standard tablet hardware priced above $250 generally performs much better and users will not experience such issues.

Avoid Amazon tablets because while the OS is a derivative of Android, the Flow app will not be available in the Amazon app store, which is separate from the GooglePlay store.

Printer Hardware Recommendations

Flow is compatible with any modern (i.e. currently manufactured) laser jet or laser printer for printing window labels. Any printer that the Android operating system is currently compatible with will be compatible with Flow. Therefore, you may print window labels using WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC or any other protocol that the Android OS and your printer support.

The older your existing printer, the less likely Android itself will be compatible with your existing printer, and if the OS isn't compatible with your printer then Flow will not be able to "hand off" the window label print job to your printer. AutoUpLink Tech will not support legacy printers for the Flow app, and we reserve the right to refuse to address support inquiries related to printers that are not compatible with the Android OS itself, which includes "legacy printer hardware" that is no longer manufactured or supported by its manufacturers.

AutoUpLink Tech's ongoing internal testing and field tests have found the following printers perform well both in dynamic, outdoor field environments and in a static office setting for use with the FLOW app(s):

  • HP LaserJet Pro m203dw monochrome Printer
  • HP Laserjet M209dw Printer
  • HP Laserjet M209dwe Printer
  • HP LaserJet Pro M15w Printer
  • HP Laserjet M209dwe Printer
  • HP Neverstop Laser 1001nw Printer

These printers printed flawlessly (thousands of times) both window labels and work summaries from the app on-the-lot. While these are not the only printers you can purchase and use with FLOW, add these printers to your shopping list if you don't already have a preferred printer model or preferred manufacturer.

Printers with Issues

Own an Epson Printer? We have one in our office. Getting an Android tablet to print to an Epson printer is like eating a waffle in one bite. Some folks can pull it off, but the rest of us struggle. Our development team proved and verified that Epson's printing app as of March 2017 has known issues that Epson is working to address in a future release of their printing app. Just expect that label printing from Flow to an Epson printer will be imperfect until your printer manufacturer (Epson) steps up and releases a new version of their printer software.
